Study: Cloud migration 2023
The "Cloud Migration 2023" study was conducted in spring 2023 by CIO, CSO and COMPUTERWOCHE in collaboration with Claranet and other industry experts. It sheds light on where companies in Germany actually stand on their journey to the cloud, how they are proceeding with the migration, what they expect from it and what challenges they are facing.
Key Findings:
- Cloud migration often lacks a clear strategy: Only 40 per cent of respondents are currently implementing cloud migration with a strategy. Nevertheless, the majority have now developed a strategic approach or are in the process of doing so.
- 80 per cent are satisfied with cloud migration projects: Cloud migration is successful in the vast majority of cases, especially in large companies, where the satisfaction rate is particularly high.
- Top 2 goals of cloud migration: First and foremost, companies expect cloud migration to boost digitalisation (44 percent) and reduce costs by accelerating processes (37 percent).
- Cloud migration is still in the planning phase in many places: Only 39 percent of respondents have implemented at least one cloud migration project. The majority are still working on plans for the near or medium term.
- Rarely afraid of losing control: Companies are not afraid of the cloud. Only five per cent of respondents fear an extensive loss of control over their applications moved to the cloud.
- Challenges on the way to the cloud: From a technical perspective, the top challenges of cloud migration are the IT infrastructure and security aspects, while the complexity of the topic and the duration of the migration process are the top organisational challenges.
- Off to the cloud with on-premise software and in-house developments: 71 per cent of respondents want to move 20 to 80 per cent of their on-premise solutions to the cloud, with large companies leading the way.
- Cloud migration is most frequently carried out via hybrid extension: Just under half of respondents (49 per cent) modernise their applications before moving to the cloud. 31 per cent move them to the cloud via lift and shift and 28 per cent build them from scratch.
